Phantom Lover (NYC) on The Main Ingredient 1/25!

The ever-mysterious Phantom Lover will join me this Monday at midnight in the East Village Radio Studio to talk about his excellent Mauve EP and to play a guest DJ set for the 88th edition of The Main Ingredient.

About Phantom Lover:

Who (or what) is Phantom Lover? Conceived as a collaborative effort, Phantom Lover is the premier project by Brooklyn-based producer Hadyn. Named after the 1976 Leon Ware recording of the same name, Phantom Lover was imagined as a cross between a one man production team and a large scale collective effort, and with the help of a cast of vocalists which includes new school soul talent Jesse Boykins III, UK songstress Fatima, the eclectic Sarah White, and DC’s own Nicholas Ryan Gant, Hadyn is pleased to present the Mauve EP.

Originally from Los Angeles, Hadyn moved to Brooklyn, New York in 2005 to attend and subsequently graduate from sound engineering school. Afterwards, while interning at a record studio in Brooklyn, Hadyn met Jesse Boykins III, who insisted that Hadyn include his track “Chanel” on Jesse’s then-upcoming album “The Beauty Created”. Then, after years of DJing in New York and honing his production skills, Hadyn felt it was time to put his Phantom Lover concept into motion. Based on dj/producer based efforts such as Soul II Soul, Massive Attack and many others, Phantom Lover is meant to be a combination of beat culture production and more traditional based song writing. Balance is key in Hadyn’s mind, and with his Phantom Lover project and his incredible cast of collaborators he is proud to share the Mauve EP with the world, his first step in what will sure to be a long venture ahead.

DJ Chela (NYC) On The Main Ingredient 12/21!

DJ Chela is going to come by The Main Ingredient Monday night to play a guest set!
(DJ Chela on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace. Her site.)

DJ Chela’s Bio:

DJ Chela is the DJ for the next generation, representing her values and music with passion. Since her beginnings in 2002, she has performed on three continents, branding her name in everything from radio, clubs, mixtapes, battles and live shows to political activism. Out of her legwork she has birthed a movement all her own: the New Girl Order, embracing the new possibilities for our world when Women’s voices have an undeniable and respected presence in Hip Hop and society as a whole.

Spending her formative years between Durham, NC and Nicaragua, Chela saw a lot of the world and from a young age dedicated her life to a global movement for social justice. During this time she also became impassioned by music and in ‘93 learned to play the guitar, writing and performing original songs. In 1998, living in Oberlin, Ohio, she fell in love with DJing and after several years gathered the experience and courage to take it on. Later in Durham she worked alongside the Reggae sound system TNT Sound and turntablism pioneer DJ Soundmachine, honing her skills.

Today, her live sets are a dynamic synthesis of Hip Hop, RnB, Reggae, Latin rhythms, Rock and Pop to classic funk and soul, and have secured her gigs everywhere from New York, Miami, DC, Philadelphia, to Caracas, Venezuela. Chela’s recent mixtape releases “Chela for President,” “Embedded Reporter: Live from the Front Line,” and “High Treason” have helped her to establish a unique style all her own in mixtapes: revolutionary themes combined with scratch production, mixing and original blends, with a focus on showcasing emerging artists.

In 2005 she earned the nomination for “Best Female Mixtape DJ” at the Justo’s Mixtape Awards, as well as the prestigious induction into both Justo Faison’s Justo’s Mixtape Allstars and the elite all-female Hip Hop movement the Murda Mamis. DJ Chela hosts and mixes the weekly radio program “New Girl Order Radio” at Duke University’s WXDU, and was recently selected as one of the “Top 10 most influential College DJs” by Urban Network Magazine. She has been featured in The Source, Mixtape Magazine, Ozone Magazine, Down Magazine, and graced the front page of her hometown papers numerous times. Chela has worked alongside revolutionary MC Immortal Technique as his DJ, and has opened up for such artists as Remy Martin, Rah Digga, Talib Kweli, dead prez, Saigon, and KRS ONE, also sharing the turntables with legends Luv Bug Starski, DJ Showtime, DJ Envy, and many others.

Beyond the realm of DJing, Chela is also a singer/songwriter, visual artist, Reiki master and aspiring fashion designer, possessing an artillery of hidden talents she promises the world will bear witness to in time. With a style and charisma that rivals her DJ skills, backed with a passionate commitment to social justice, Chela is emerging as an unstoppable young star with authenticity, originality and depth. In 2006 and beyond, as she continues to drop mixtapes, travel, perform and speak, the New Girl Order is on its way.

What others are saying about DJ Chela:

“Chela is a true conduit of information and definitely a stop on the Underground Railroad.”
– M1 of dead prez

“Chela is as essential to Hip Hop’s Political scene as some of the dope records she spins that are found in her crates. Chela redefines beef by not battling other emcees and deejays, but instead she stays bringing crazy heat to this oppressive system.”
– Davey D, www.daveyd.com

“Chela is the hottest female DJ in the country.”
– Saigon

“When I heard her muppet/chop combos, I knew Chela was no joke.”
– DJ Soundmachine

Qool DJ Marv (NYC) On The Main Ingredient 11/23!

Qool Marv, whose sets were a major inspiration for me to start DJing, is going to come by The Main Ingredient next week and share a guest set from his deep, deep crates. Not to be missed.

Marv’s Bio:

There is a method to the magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the atmosphere of the venue and the energy of the people, and then he blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Qool DJ Marv captivates you with his blend. The fluid flow and continuously ascending momentum of his wide-ranging sets is inviting, hypnotic, and breathtaking. Qool DJ Marv crafts an unforgettable feel good, get down party where everyone in the room will hear something that they enjoy. It’s as if he knew you were coming.

An inventive pioneer, Qool DJ Marv deliberately defies categorization to great effect. An evening of Qool DJ Marv may include a mind boggling array of selections spanning many eras and decades of music including R&B, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Latin, House, Jazz, Funk, Rock & Roll, Soul, and Disco classics, and Eclectic beats from around the world.

Since 1994, Marv has been producing mixed tapes/CD compilations that illuminate the many styles of music that he loves but have fallen short of major exposure and marketing. Listeners enjoy the meticulous attention to the sequencing and the seamless continuity of the mixing. Qool DJ Marv has a way of introducing genre-defying songs to listeners who previously may have only preferred popular mainstream offerings.

With a DJ resume that includes playing at venues in every major American city, worldwide and at special events of the entertainment elite, Marv has maestro’d parties in Barcelona, Moscow, London, Glasgow, Oslo, Dublin, Dubai, Paris, and the Bahamas with his good time grooves and has played at several premiere parties for HBO (Sopranos, Sex in the City, Entourage, The Wire and Oz) as well as playing at HBO’s Emmy and Golden Globe after parties in Hollywood.

It’s Qool DJ Marv’s laid-back demeanor and the playfully enchanting smile that you first notice. He is genuinely pleased to meet you and despite his even keel, he’s bubbling at the thought of what he has in store for your listening, dancing, and celebratory pleasure. There’s an exuberant idealism in Marv’s appealing mix that bridges us all – with a universal vibe, everybody gets down.
